WWII Vet Memorial Photos by Bill Needles |
I escorted my mom on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. this past summer. We had a MD-88 full of WWII vets to see the memorials.
It was an amazing experience. We had lunch with a Tuskegee Airman and Senator Bob Dole. Thats my mom in the pic with Bob Dole. She was a pilot in the WAC. The man in the pic is my father who
passed away last year. We took his flag up there for a presentation.all the vets in front of the Marine Corp memorial were at Iwo Jima....I would say the majority of the men were pilots. Mom
was the only female on the trip. They are dying at the rate of 1500 per day. This is an organization based in Ohio that flies WWII vets to see their memorial before they die. They don't pay a
dime, it is all paid by sponsors and the volunteers that escort them on the trips. There is a waiting list of 3 years for vets wanting to take the trip. My dad was on the waiting list and
passed away 2 weeks before his trip. Thats why they honored him by taking his flag on the trip. The most memorable part of the trip was when I was standing in front of the wall of gold stars.
The shear volume of stars representing American deaths was over welling. As I stood there trying to comprehend it, a guide walked up and said "pretty amazing, that many deaths", what if I
told you each star represented 100 American Deaths......that was beyond comprehension. He told us more GI's died in one afternoon then have died in the entire Iraq war........Bill.
